The Economy Of Words
Podcast Script
“The Economy of Words”
Hello out there! I am
Stephanie Quillen, and today I’d like to discuss my ideas on the importance of
the economy of words.
Economy is defined as: Careful management of resources to
avoid unnecessary expenditure or waste.
Or simply put: saving.
When communicating, our words are our prime resource; how we
deliver our message is how we manage our resources.
Economy of words is making the most of your message, by eliminating
any unnecessary components such as repetition of words, phrases or ideas, and
run on sentences.
Too much of anything is a waste this applies especially in
communicating. Too many words take away
from the intended message.
I have heard many speakers who ramble on and off topic for
far too long, to eventually conclude with “What I mean by all this is…” In their quest to add meaning, they inadvertently
rob their original message of its power.
Here are two different portrayals of the same message:
1)
You only have one life to live before you die
2)
You only live once
Both sentences carry the same
message but the first statement loses power along the way.
It is common sense that anything
that lives will eventually die so the last 3 words in the 1st
sentence are just waste. Then we are
left with “You only have one life to live.”
This is a clearer message but can be cleaned up even further. Saying that we have one LIFE to LIVE is
repetitive. We do not need both the noun
and verb form of one word to get the point across.
“You Only Live Once.”
This simply put statement hits much harder than the drug out version in
#1.
Words carry their own meaning and can only hold momentum
when going straight forward.
*Economy of words is empowering the message by eliminating the
waste.*

Take Chances
A lot of them, because honestly no matter where you end up or who you get there with, life turns out exactly how it was always going to be. Each choice makes you who you are. Mistakes should not be looked at with regret but appreciation for adding to your character and teaching crucial lessons. Make mistakes, but learn from them. Everything we've ever done was exactly what we wanted to be doing at one point. No idea is a bad idea if its your own. Everything is worth it. Always be you... And be ok with that.
